W01 - What’s New in the Last 10 Years?: Update for Experienced Psychotherapists or Counselors

It has been estimated that the half-life for a professional psychologist is 9 years. Thus, professional psychologists need to work assiduously to keep up to date with the changes in the field. This continuing education program strives to do that by having participants reflect on the most significant changes in the field in the last 10 years. To facilitate this reflection, the presenter offers his update in the psychotherapy and counseling literature in the last 10 years as an opportunity for participants to reflect on and consider their perceptions of the important developments in the field. This focuses on changes in psychotherapy and counseling and does not consider changes in other fields, except as they influence psychotherapy or counseling. There will be considerable participant interaction.

 

Course Objectives:
1. List ideas that they have learned in the last 10 years related to their work as psychotherapists; and
2. Link recent ideas to their actual work as psychotherapists or counselors

 

This course does NOT qualify for ethics credit.

W03 - Retirement Age Clients: So What Happens Next?

Retirement and employment are best thought of as a continuum, rather than binary states. A Health Fitness Specialist, Financial Adviser and Psychologist will address aspects of winding down employment from perspective of each profession. Practical advice and exercises to help your clients will be provide.

Objectives:

1. Explain and demonstrate physical fitness needs of a senior population.
2. Outline areas of financial concern, and where to address them, for seniors.
3. Utilize research on retirement and satisfaction in therapy and counseling.
4. Look at retirement as a continuum.
5. Use rudimentary financial concepts to make sure clients are addressing their financial needs.

The rate of suicide within the United States has increased substantially in the last 20 years. However, the knowledge base concerning suicide has also rapidly expanded as well. This program reviews practical and evidence-informed steps that psychologists can take to screen for, assess, and manage suicidal patients in an outpatient setting. The presenter will view suicide through the perspective of the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide. There will be minimal overlap with the program Suicide Prevention with a focus on the Treatment of Suicidal Patients.

Objectives:
1. Describe the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide
2. List the steps necessary to assess suicidal patients
3. List the steps necessary to manage suicidal patients

W07 - Integrating CBT & Experiential Interventions: A New Short Term Group Model

Description:
The Cognitive Experiential Group Therapy (CEGT) model, [an action model], incorporating Psycho-dramatic and Cognitive Behavioral Techniques that promote dynamic group interaction(s).  Focus is identifying and exploring negative automatic thoughts and irrational beliefs, placing them in action utilizing Psychodrama techniques and challenging negative thinking.  An emotionally & concrete data-based problem-solving process.

Objective:
1. Describe how The Cognitive Experiential Group Therapy (CEGT) model can be used to create a safe and secure environment where individuals can share their dilemma(s) without restraint.
2. Complete & interpret the Automatic Thought Record (ATR).
3. Identify automatic thoughts & focus on 'hot thoughts'. Discuss the meaning of automatic thoughts as they relate to core-beliefs and/or schemas.
4. Explain and implement the major psycho-dramatic techniques; role-playing, interview in role reversal, protagonist, auxiliary ego, doubling, concretizing and the empty chair techniques.

W10 - A Supervisor’s Journey: Skills, Responsibilities and Challenges

Participants are guided through small group discussions and exercises based on several models of self-awareness (Johari window, Emotional Intelligence), relationship development (Balint) and preparation to clarify the supervisor’s role, and identification of target areas for continued professional development. In addition, a model of supervision of supervisors will be introduced and demonstrated.

Objectives:
a. Describe complexities in the supervisor - supervisee relationship
b. Identify strategies designed to encourage self-reflection among supervisors.
c. Balance supervision style with supervisee relationship
d. Roadmap to create regular supervision consultation with colleagues

W12 - Implementing Our Ethical Ideals through Sufficient Humility

Description:
When faced with difficult ethical issues it is often prudent to adopt an attitude of humility. Many ethics decisions are hard. Sometimes psychologists do not have all of the relevant information they need (nor time to get it). Also, our decisions may be influenced by bias outside of our awareness, fatigue, or other extraneous factors. This workshop asks psychologists to consider how ethical humility can help them to better implement the spirit of overarching General (aspirational) principles (such as beneficence, respect for patient autonomy, etc.). There will be participant interaction.

Objectives:
1. Describe common limitations that psychologists face when addressing complex clinical and ethical issues; and
2. List the ways that sufficient humility and curiosity can lead to better patient outcomes and more ethical decisions; and
3. Apply ethical humility that helps them adhere to the spirit of the APA Ethics Code in their work.

W14 - Innovative Strategies For Helping Individuals With Severe Mental Illness: Lessons From An Extended

Description:
Traditional mental health systems tend to provide inadequate care for individuals with severe mental illness (SMI). Treatment is often limited to medication and/or some form of case management. Individuals diagnosed with SMI (e.g. Schizophrenia) are perceived and treated as having little hope for recovery and a chance to live productive lives. This workshop describes a Pilot Program that implemented innovative strategies to help individuals with SMI successfully reintegrate into the community and provide data that suggest a need to improve traditional mental health treatment for this population. Strategies discussed could be applied/adapted in various settings, including outpatient.

Objectives:
1. Identify obstacles individuals with severe mental illness (SMI) encounter in traditional mental health systems
2. Describe Recovery-Oriented Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
3. Describe the implementation and innovations of the Pilot Program
4. Discuss the Pilot Program successes, challenges, and new initiatives
5. List at least 3 innovative strategies for working with individuals with SMI in various settings, including outpatient settings.
