It has been estimated that the half-life for a professional psychologist is 9 years. Thus, professional psychologists need to work assiduously to keep up to date with the changes in the field. This continuing education program strives to do that by having participants reflect on the most significant changes in the field in the last 10 years. To facilitate this reflection, the presenter offers his update in the psychotherapy and counseling literature in the last 10 years as an opportunity for participants to reflect on and consider their perceptions of the important developments in the field. This focuses on changes in psychotherapy and counseling and does not consider changes in other fields, except as they influence psychotherapy or counseling. There will be considerable participant interaction.

Suicide is the 10^th leading cause of death in the United States and the most frequent crisis experienced by mental health professionals. This program reviews basic information about the assessment, management, and treatment of patients at risk to die from suicide.

W05 - 3 Ethics CE Credits - Intermediate

When faced with difficult ethical issues it is often prudent to adopt an attitude of humility. Many ethics decisions are hard. Sometimes psychologists do not have all of the relevant information they need (nor time to get it). Also, our decisions may be influenced by bias outside of our awareness, fatigue, or other extraneous factors. This workshop asks psychologists to consider how sufficient modesty and curiosity can help them to better implement the spirit of overarching General (aspirational) principles (such as beneficence, respect for patient autonomy, etc.). There will be participant interaction.

(This workshop qualifies for 3 contact hours for the ethics requirement as mandated by the Pennsylvania State Board of Psychology.)

Social media is now an integral part of daily life, for better or worse.  We explore classic social theories and how they relate to modern cyber culture.  We will address how social media can promote violence, both online and in real world examples, and what actions we can take.

W08 - 3 Ethics CE Credits - Advanced

All psychologists will encounter patients who present with factors that make them complex, difficult, or high risk.  When faced with such patients, it is important for all psychologists (and especially psychologists who are consultants or supervisors) to rely on ethically based risk management principles. This workshop will review ethically based risk management principles and apply them in true to life vignettes. Participants are expected to participate in small group discussions of ethical dilemmas.

(This workshop qualifies for 3 contact hours for the ethics requirement as mandated by the Pennsylvania State Board of Psychology.)

Participants are guided through small group discussions and exercises based on several models of self-awareness (Johari window, Emotional Intelligence), relationship development (Balint) and preparation to clarify the supervisor’s role, and identification of target areas for continued professional development. In addition, a model of supervision of supervisors will be introduced and demonstrated.

This lunch workshop will cover the basics of how a bill becomes a law and identify the major decision makers in Harrisburg. We will also guide you through PPA’s legislative advocacy efforts, including the decision making about which bills to support or oppose. Finally, we will challenge you to become an advocate for the psychology profession and provide you with the tools to successfully advocate for you and the patients you serve.
