Part 1 - ADHD in Life: A More Useful Model of ADHD
ADHD involves distractibility, impulsivity, and forgetfulness, all of which are symptoms of poor attention management. Unfortunately, though, ADHD is about time, not attention. ADHD's fundamental impact is on how people apply their executive functions in order to complete tasks in relation to time. Too often, the pull of short-term goals wins out over pursuing long-term goals. It can appear that people with ADHD are simply being irresponsible or short-sighted, but more accurately, it's that they don't see time or feel the future strongly enough, until it's too late. By understanding this, psychologists will be able to shift their strategies to help these clients (and many without ADHD) to more effectively work towards future goals. This webinar offers a highly useful conceptualization of ADHD that will not only explain clients' past difficulties, but also offer hope for a better future.

Part 2 - ADHD in Mind: Neurology Drives Psychology (in Both Romantic Partners)
ADHD is a neurologically-based information processing disorder, but it has significant psychological effects on how a person sees themselves, addresses challenges, and interacts with others. Living with ADHD, especially if undiagnosed and untreated, tends to make certain kinds of experiences more likely which influences how they deal with subsequent situations. We will discuss the mindset traps that those with ADHD often find themselves in and how it leads to less than optimal coping behavior, as well as how it can evoke complementary problematic responses from their romantic partners or parents. We will then discuss how to help clients identify, challenge, and rise above the mindset traps so that they can respond to challenges more effectively.

1. Discuss how clients can overcome the mindset traps that get in the way of life success and relationship happiness for adults with ADHD.

 

Part 3 - ADHD in Love: An Individual Condition that Drives Relationship Dynamics

Part 3 - ADHD in Love: An Individual Condition that Drives Relationship Dynamics
Couples where one partner has ADHD typically have the same struggles as other couples, but perhaps more frequently and more intensely. They often fall into a chase dynamic with the non-ADHD partner feeling the burden of over-functioning and the ADHD partner feeling too often like they can't get it right. It's crucial to break this disheartening tug of war by helping both partners to negotiate disagreements more effectively. We will discuss how to help clients navigate this process of balancing the need for some aspects of the relationship to change while also accepting the differences that remain. We will also discuss why a satisfying sex life is not only a reward for good behavior but also an important driver of good behavior that therapists shouldn't ignore.

1. Explain the many ways that ADHD can impact both partners in a couple and the common dynamics that ensue; and
2. Help clients create more sustainable solutions to differences and disagreements.
