Description:
The times they are a changing. The continued dominance of managed care companies over third party reimbursement and the new uncertainty created by the Affordable Care Act in both the private and public sectors have increased the complexity of the legal and regulatory environment faced by psychologists. In this unpredictable environment, the need to avoid adverse disciplinary events remains an important priority and an active risk management strategy is still an essential element of professional practice.

After a brief introduction describing The Trust’s Risk Management Philosophy and Strategy, this workshop will focus on three specific topic areas: working with couples and families, working with potentially suicidal clients, and the ethical and legal challenges of developing a professionally and personally appropriate retirement strategy. The workshop is applicable to psychologists working in all types of settings where health services are provided.

Objectives:
• Discuss The Trust Risk Management Philosophy, including strategies for identifying high risk situations and managing professional practice risks.
• Identify strategies for managing potential conflicts in conjoint treatment with couples and families.
• Identify risk management strategies in working with children with particular emphasis on the risks associated with divorced or divorcing families.
• Identify essential risk management strategies for assessing and managing outpatient suicide risk.
• Identify “post-vention” strategies for managing risk after a patient suicide.
• Identify “self care” strategies for psychologists who have suffered the loss of a patient to suicide.
• Discuss different professional retirement pathways.
• Identify the advantages and disadvantages of various strategies in planning for your own personal and professional retirement.
• Discuss how to effectively and ethically close a professional practice.

Description:
In 2013 and 2014 Pennsylvania enacted numerous changes to the Child Protective Services Law. The purpose of this workshop is to review the signs leading to the recognition of child abuse and the reporting requirements for suspected child abuse in Pennsylvania. Those mandated reporters who complete this course will fulfill their mandatory requirements for licensing renewal and applicants for health care licenses in Pennsylvania will fulfill their requirement for education in child abuse reporting and recognition in Pennsylvania. This workshop describes the child welfare services in Pennsylvania, defines important terms related to the child abuse reporting law, and delineates the responsibilities of mandated reporters, ways to recognize child abuse, and other topics.

Objectives:
 1. Describe the child welfare system in Pennsylvania;
 2. Define child, child abuse, perpetrators, and other relevant terms;
 3. Paraphrase the responsibilities of mandated reporters;
 4. Recognize the signs of child abuse and situations where child abuse must be reported; and
 5. Fulfill their responsibilities as mandated reporters of child abuse.

W01 - 3 Ethics CE Credits - Intermediate

The treatment of children in Pennsylvania involves a complex web of laws, court cases, and regulations that can become difficult to navigate. This workshop will cover common ethical and legal issues that arise when working with minors in Pennsylvania including consent to treatment, confidentiality with children, access to records, and other issues. It will not cover the Child Protective Services Law. (This workshop qualifies for 3 contact hours for the ethics requirement as mandated by the Pennsylvania State Board of Psychology.)

1. Describe Pennsylvania’s ethical and legal standards regarding minor’s consent to treatment, confidentiality, and patient access to records; and
2. Analyze difficult cases using patient focused risk management principles.

This workshop will describe 10 quick steps on how psychologists can improve the quality of services to suicidal patients. These brief steps are anchored on overarching ethical principles and sound professional judgment. This workshop will fulfill Act 74 requirements

1. Identify ten strategies that psychologists can use that will increase their effectiveness in working with suicidal patients.

3 Ethics CE Credits - Intermediate

Ethics should be more than a list of disembodied rules divorced from our day-to-day experiences as psychologists. This workshop looks at how we can live out our ethical ideals by developing the habit of focusing on our overarching values and being on guard unrecognized biases or fatigue that can keep us from acting in a manner congruent with our deeply held values. (This workshop qualifies for 3 contact hours for the ethics requirement as mandated by the Pennsylvania State Board of Psychology.)

Objectives:

1. Identify their deeply held values that motivate them in their professional lives; and
2. Describe how self-reflection can help psychologist achieve more ethical habits of practice and reach more ethical decisions; and
3. Apply the spirit of the APA Ethics Code in their work.

Psychological First Aid: Helping Others in Times of Stress is a basic level web-­‐based, instructor-­‐led and virtual instructor-­‐led course that provides a framework for understanding the factors that affect stress responses in disaster relief workers and the clients they serve. The course introduces the principles of psychological first aid and guidelines for when to refer to a Disaster Mental Health worker. Participants engage in practice exercises and a review of the course content. Learn how to respond to diverse populations across varying age groups. It is a required course for anyone who wishes to become a Red Cross Disaster Mental Health Responder.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to
 - Recognize the signs of stress in clients, co-­‐workers, and themselves.
 - Provide immediate support to people who may be experiencing stress by using
psychological first aid principles.
 - Obtain Disaster Mental Health support for clients, co-­‐workers, and themselves,
when needed.
