W01 - 3 Ethics CE Credits - Intermediate

Because the therapist-patient relationship is central to psychotherapy, dysfunctional relationships can lead to tension, resentment, poor outcomes, and burnout in the clinician.  Balint work facilitates understanding the complexity and therapeutic potential of the clinician-patient relationship.  Participants will learn about Balint groups by participation in Balint group case discussions. (This workshop qualifies for 3 contact hours for the ethics requirement as mandated by the Pennsylvania State Board of Psychology.)

1. Describe the essential aspects of a Balint group’s safe learning environment
2. Incorporate colleague perspectives on challenging patient relationships
3. Use self-awareness and self-reflection processes to improve relationships with patients

Outcome measurement tools that are user- and client-friendly can be developed in real world, clinical settings while still adhering to reliability and validity principles.  Lessons learned in the development of the PFMI for seniors can also be applied to other populations and contexts.

Objectives:

2. Have substantive conversations with geriatric clients about promoting a healthy lifestyle

This is a luncheon with a speaker at a cost of $40

This program introduces psychologists to practical and evidence-informed steps to screen for and assess suicidal patients. Emphasis will be placed on using the assessment to inform the management and treatment of suicide. The presenter will view suicide through the perspective of the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide.

Objectives:
At the end of this program the participants will be able to describe basic information about assessing suicidal risk

This program will describe how to use therapeutic drumming and rhythm in a therapy session, and will highlight the benefits of doing so.  Drum beats speak a language that bridges cultural barriers, breaks down emotional walls, and has been found effective for treating many disorders

Objectives:

1. Describe the traditional uses of drumming and rhythm in various cultures, and will be assess relevance to current therapy practice
2. Discuss the ways in which drum and rhythm can be used in therapy.
3. Explain the purposes of using rhythm therapy in therapy.
4. Describe populations in which rhythm therapy can be effective.
5. Utilize rhythm therapy interventions as part of therapy sessions.

3 CE Credits - Introductory

In this interactive workshop, participants will learn about existential theory and suicidality, relevant research, and strategies for helping individuals move toward choosing life.  The presenter will share examples of how she and others transcended suicidal crises. Audience members will then be divided into groups to engage in active learning.

Objectives:

At the end of the program, participants will be able to
1.  discuss how suicidal thoughts correlate with spirituality and the human condition.
2.  explain existential concepts and the givens of existence as they relate to suicidality.
3.  describe the therapeutic factors that can help individuals move through the “dark place.”
4.  educate others as to the common myths of how to intervene with suicidal clients.
5.  demonstrate effective skills and spiritual approaches for intervening with suicidal individuals.
