3 Continuing Education Ethics Credits

Program Description:

State and APA Code require Pennsylvania psychologists to protect patients from the harm of abrupt termination and compromised clinical records. Using clinical vignettes and practical guidance, this course guides psychologists in creating a Professional Will, choosing a qualified Practice Executor, meeting ethical/legal obligation, and protecting patients, family, and friends.

Program Learning Objectives: At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

1. Explain the psychotherapist's ethical duty to plan for sudden termination.
2. Describe the important components to include in a plan/Professional Will.
3. List the clinical, business, and practical duties of a Practice Executor, and guidelines for best practice.

Pennsylvania Psychologists have ethical and legal obligations to create an emergency plan, such as a Professional Will, to safeguard their clients and clinical records in the event of death or incapacitation.  Yet, many of us do not have an adequate Professional Will that is comprehensive and actionable.  In addition, it is difficult to identify a Practice Executor who would have the emotional separation, time and expertise to execute a Professional Will.

Dr. Miller is a psychologist with nearly 25 years in private practice.  She is a thought leader on the ethical responsibilities psychologists have to their patients.  She has published articles and provides trainings on Professional Wills and the impact on patients of neglecting to plan for the unexpected.  Recognizing the challenges that many psychologists face in fulfilling their ethical duties, Dr. Miller founded TheraClosure, a professional executor service for therapists, as a comprehensive solution. For more information, visit www.theraclosure.com
