Cognitive Deficits in the Elderly with Bipolar Disorder: A Neuropsychological Perspective

Program Description:

Cognitive impairments can be both a consequence of bipolar disorder and potentially exacerbated by age-related changes. Several cognitive domains are frequently impacted by bipolar disorder in the elderly. Understanding and awareness of the intersectionality of various neurobiological factors is essential by accurate assessment and effective management of bipolar disorder among this understudied population.

Program Learning Objectives: At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

1. Examine the cognitive domains impacted by bipolar disorder in the elderly, including memory, executive functioning, attention, and processing speed, and describe how these deficits are influenced by both the disorder and age-related changes in brain structure and function.
2. Discuss the neurobiological mechanisms underlying cognitive dysfunction in elderly individuals with bipolar disorder, focusing on structural brain changes, neurotransmitter dysregulation, and altered brain connectivity that contribute to cognitive impairments.
3. Evaluate the clinical implications of aging and bipolar disorder, considering how factors such as vascular changes, medication effects, and comorbid conditions influence cognitive outcomes, and explore strategies for assessment and intervention to mitigate these cognitive deficits in older adults with bipolar disorder.
