Program Description: Using the presenter's exchange visits to three African countries as a backdrop, this workshop presents challenges in mental health awareness in Africa and efforts to improve awareness. Understanding the impact of colonialism, the One Health Initiative, and cultural humility are presented as essential tools for this work.
Program Learning Objectives: At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to: 1. Describe at least 2 ways that the history of colonialism affects awareness of mental health challenges and delivery of mental health services in Africa. 2. Describe the One Health Initiative and explain how it is relevant to health care and mental health care service delivery in Africa, and to integrated care in the US. 3. State at least 2 challenges to mental health awareness in Africa and at least 2 opportunities for collaborative ways to improve awareness. 4. Describe the concept of cultural humility, state how it is different from diversity awareness and explain how it is essential to collaborative work in African mental health as well as to engagement with diverse individuals who are served by mental health practitioners in the US. 5. List 2 ways in which teaching psychological concepts to persons in another part of the world can assist a psychologist to explain mental health concepts in the US.
