Program Description:

This presentation will introduce the underlying biology of opioid addiction.  It will explore how addiction should be considered a chronic relapsing brain disease.  Finally, the discussion will explore the use of pharmacological agents in treatment of opioid addiction (MAT; medication-assisted treatment) as one option to help psychologists and psychiatrists address this societal concern.

Program Learning Objectives: At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the relationship between drugs of abuse and natural brain messengers;
  2. Explain how drugs of abuse change brain structure and function; and
  3. Convince someone that opioid addiction is a brain disease and should be treated as such.
