Program Description:

This presentation summarizes the research on the topic of intimate partner violence (IPV) and sexual minorities from evidence-based research to provide a broader understanding of the similarities and difference in partner violence among heterosexual and LGBTQ+. To ensure inclusivity we first address heteronormative biases that exist which often lead to discrepancies of treatment, resources, and criminal justice response. Such biases may be used to stigmatize the LGBTQ+ community, which can lead to greater minority stress and social oppression. This presentation focuses on the unique barriers associated with help-seeking including physical and mental health services, access to shelters, and general mistrust of law enforcement that leads to a reticence to report IPV. Each step toward help-seeking for victims of IPV, professionals who are positioned to help this vulnerable community can lack training, awareness, sensitivity, or policies to guide decision making when assisting members of the LGBTQ+ community. More needs to be accomplished in terms of recognizing and addressing community readiness to become more inclusive. Presenters provide novel ideas and possible solutions to improve how we recognize and respond to IPV with sexual and gender minorities.

Program Learning Objectives: At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize the prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) within LGBTQ+ populations;
  2. Discuss their own attitudes about sexual minorities when identifying and responding to IPV among sexual minorities who face unique individual-interpersonal-and systemic-level barriers to accessing support services;
  3. Interpret the information provided to better recognize and respond to partner violence among sexual minority youth, adults, and elderly populations; and
  4. Gain novel ideas for practice, prevention, and intervention, with sexual minority victims of IPV.
